I went to Scotland over spring break with my family and grandparents. It was a really long flight, but worth it.
When we got there, we went to Cullen. It was one of my favorite places because it was an old town with a pretty bay and Bow Fiddle Rock. The rocks around it were huge and I liked climbing on them.
We drove over 900 miles, well, my dad did! In Scotland, the steering wheel is on the right side, and they drive on the left side of the road. It felt weird, but I liked looking out the window at everything. We saw castles, mountains, sheep, and these shaggy cows called “hairy coos.” We talked a lot in the van.
We then went to The Highlands. Glencoe had big mountains, and some had snow on top. We stopped at a road where the Skyfall movie was filmed. Also in The Highlands was Fort William. That is where we saw the Glenfinnan Viaduct, or what I know it as the “Harry Potter Bridge.”
My favorite place of all was the Isle of Skye. It was really special! We hiked up the Old Man of Storr, saw Kilt Rock waterfall, and explored castle ruins. There was a beach that had dinosaur footprints in the rocks!
The food in Scotland was really good. I tried fish and chips, and I loved it.
One of the best parts was going on a boat ride on Loch Ness. This is where people look for Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster. A Supermarine Spitfire plane flew over us while we were on the boat. The captain let my brother Parker and me drive the boat for a few minutes. He also told us stories about castles, clans, and Scottish history.
After that, we went to the city of Inverness. We heard people playing bagpipes and saw people wearing kilts. That was cool.
I had so much fun on this trip. I wish I could go again for a month next time!
Fun Fact – People in Scotland say “wee” (small), “loch” (lake), “lovely” (nice), and “cheers” (thank you).
