All year I wait and wait for the opening day of hunting season. The year is long, but it is worth the wait. The day finally comes, my alarm goes off, and I smell Dad’s coffee brewing. I get out of bed and put on my camouflage gear, topped with a bright orange hat. I double check my gear to make sure I have everything, including some snacks.
It is time to go to the stand walking quietly, slowly, and smoothly so the animals do not hear us. It is so peaceful that it feels like it is only me and God. When we climb into the stand, I can feel the cold chilling breeze on my face. While sitting in the stand, I pass the time by watching the trees move in the wind and the critters scrambling around, and sometimes I fall into a short nap.
I am sitting and sitting when, out of nowhere, a bush starts rustling.
Then a deer walks out. My heart is beating faster and faster. My mind is racing. I take aim. All my training has led up to this moment, and I tell myself, whether I win or lose, this is my favorite day of the year.
