What happens when thoughtful design, centuries-old traditions and a desire to help people slow down come together?
For husband-and-wife team Jon and Kyle Hittner, the answer is MELT, a unique sauna and cold plunge experience that is introducing a fresh concept to Western Kentucky while creating spaces designed for connection, conversation and rest. Inspired by sauna cultures around the world, particularly Nordic-style sauna traditions, as well as the growing popularity of contrast therapy in larger cities, the Hittners saw an opportunity to bring something different to the region. From the beginning, however, their vision extended beyond simply offering a sauna. Instead, they set out to create environments where people could disconnect from screens, reconnect with one another and experience the benefits of heat, cold and intentional downtime in an approachable setting.

“Jon and I built MELT because we wanted to create a place where people could slow down a little,” Kyle Hittner said. “The temperatures are a huge part of the experience. The sauna is genuinely hot, the plunges are genuinely cold and there’s something really powerful about stepping away from your phone and sharing that experience with other people for 90 minutes.”
Building MELT became a true family endeavor. Jon personally designed and built the sauna truck and cold plunge systems by hand while also leading the creative direction and visual identity of the brand. Kyle focused on operations, digital strategy and the behind-the-scenes work needed to bring the concept to life. Together, they developed MELT as a business rooted less in luxury and more in thoughtful design, atmosphere and creating meaningful experiences.
That philosophy is evident in the company’s current location. Rather than operating from a traditional spa or focusing solely on private rentals, MELT has transformed an underused space in Henderson, Kentucky between Rookie’s and Baird Private Wealth Management into a welcoming gathering place. The area now features the handcrafted sauna, cold plunges, lighting and seating that encourage visitors to linger, relax and spend time together. What was once an overlooked space has become a destination where people gather throughout the week.

“We’re not really trying to recreate a luxury spa,” Jon Hittner said. “We’re more interested in creating memorable spaces and experiences that feel warm, honest and a little unexpected for this area, while introducing people to sauna culture and contrast therapy in a way that feels approachable.”
The Hittners are also passionate about sharing the growing body of research surrounding sauna bathing and contrast therapy. Studies continue to explore potential benefits related to recovery, stress management and overall well-being, and MELT plans to incorporate educational opportunities as the business grows. Still, the social aspect remains equally important.
The couple describes MELT less as a rental business and more as a rotating physical space that resides in a particular spot for 6-8 weeks so that they can better serve guest and allow the community to form and build. While private events, wedding weekends, corporate gatherings and retreats remain available, the broader vision centers on creating recurring community experiences.

That approach reflects a larger shift in how people think about self-care. Rather than being limited to gyms, spas or wellness centers, experiences like MELT invite people to gather, slow down and be present together. For Jon and Kyle, that’s the heart of what they have created. By blending handcrafted design, global inspiration and a deep appreciation for community, the Hittners are introducing Western Kentucky to an experience that feels both new and surprisingly timeless.
