The Game Bringing Friends Together Again
Do you like to play games? Maybe cards? Rummy, perhaps? Do you enjoy gathering with friends to laugh, socialize, and share stories? Are you just a little competitive?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, then Mahjong just may be the perfect game for you.
Over the last few years, Mahjong has exploded in popularity across the country — and our area is no exception. What was once considered a game played mostly by older generations has suddenly become the hottest social gathering for people of all ages. From retirees to young professionals, Mahjong nights are replacing Bunco groups, happy hours, and even book clubs.
And honestly, it is easy to see why.
My Introduction to Mahjong
I first learned how to play a couple of years ago. Like most beginners, I was completely overwhelmed at first. The tiles, the card, the strange terms like “Craks,” “Bams,” and “Dots” — it all felt like learning a foreign language.
As I excitedly explained my new hobby to my 92-year-old mother, she casually informed me that she already knew how to play and even had her own set tucked away.
To say I was surprised would be an understatement.
She told me she had played with a group of women years ago, sometime around 2000, although she preferred bridge with her friends. That conversation opened my eyes to the rich history and longstanding tradition of Mahjong.
I, however, became hooked immediately.
Not long after, I mentioned Mahjong to my daughter-in-law in Houston, Texas. Once again, I realized I was late to the trend. She and her friends had already learned the game and established a weekly neighborhood Mahjong night. That seems to be the pattern everywhere.
More Than Just a Game
Today, Mahjong is much more than a game. It has become an experience.
People gather around tables with colorful racks and beautiful tile sets, sharing appetizers, sipping wine, laughing, and catching up on life. In a world where so much communication happens through screens and text messages, Mahjong offers something many people have been missing: real connection.
There is something special about sitting around a table for several uninterrupted hours with friends.
Phones are set aside. Conversations happen naturally. New friendships form.
I now have my own beautiful Mahjong set, and it travels with me.
Last month, my sisters and I took a trip to St. Louis and decided to set up a game in the hotel lobby.
Before long, people were stopping to watch, ask questions, and share their own Mahjong stories.
Several even asked if they could join us.
That is one of the things I love most about Mahjong — it creates instant community.
So, What Exactly Is Mahjong

Mahjong is a tile-based game traditionally played with four people, although it can also be played with two or three players.
Much like a deck of cards, Mahjong has suits. Instead of hearts, diamonds, clubs, and spades, players work with Craks, Bams, and Dots, along with Winds, Dragons, Flowers, Jokers, and blanks.
Still confused?
You are not alone.
Most beginners feel overwhelmed during their first lesson. I certainly did. But somewhere between learning the tiles and completing your first winning hand, the game suddenly clicks — and that is when the obsession begins.
Mahjong combines strategy, memory, concentration, luck, and social interaction all at once. Every
game is different, which keeps players constantly challenged.
And yes, it is incredibly addictive.
A Game With Deep Roots
Mahjong’s history dates back to 19th-century China, where the game originated before eventually spreading throughout the world.
In 1937, a group of Jewish women in New York City formed what is now known as the National Mah Jongg League. Their goal was to standardize the rules and create official hands for American Mahjong.
Today, the League releases a new card every year featuring updated hands and combinations, keeping the game fresh and exciting for longtime players.
What fascinates me most is how Mahjong has bridged generations and cultures. My mother played.
Younger people are now rediscovering it. Teenagers are learning. Some families are even teaching their children to play.
Few games have that kind of staying power.
Why Everyone Is Talking About Mahjong
If you remember the days when your monthly Bunco group was the highlight of your social calendar, then you already understand the appeal. We all crave connection.
Mahjong nights offer an excuse to gather, laugh, eat good food, share stories, and simply enjoy being together. Whether you are a busy young mom, a retiree looking for community, or someone searching for a new hobby, Mahjong creates space for friendships to grow.
I have friends all over the United States now learning to play. My daughter-in-law in Texas has her regular weekly group. Another daughter-in-law in Florida wants lessons. My best friend in Cincinnati plays as well, and we are already planning games for our next girls’ trip.
Everywhere I turn, someone is talking about Mahjong.
The Best Part of All
At the end of the day, Mahjong is not really about the tiles.
It is about gathering around a table with people you enjoy. It is about challenging your brain, learning something new, and sharing laughter with friends. It is about slowing down long enough to be fully present with one another.
In a world that often feels rushed and disconnected, perhaps that is exactly why Mahjong is making such a strong comeback.
And who knows?
Maybe it is time for you to learn too.
