Tell us about your family? Kids, pets, etc. 

My wife, Sally, and I have been married for 11 years. We have two wonderful children, Winnie (10) and Albie (8). We have an Airedale terrier, Scarlett (9), and two French bulldogs Maddie (4) and her daughter, Rosie (2).

What do you do for a living and how long have you been in this position?  

I’m the owner/operator of Lee’s Barbershop. I’ve been barbering professionally since 2003, opening my own shop in 2009. Recently, I’ve taken a position on the Kentucky Board of Barbering.

How do you balance home and work life?

Balance? What’s that? But, seriously, it definitely takes work to make sure everything is taken care of. Lucky for me, I have a great wife that is very organized. What do they say? Behind every successful man there’s a woman.  That holds true in my case. We stay very busy, but I wouldn’t change a thing.

What do you enjoy most about living and working in a small town? 

I love the personal relationship that I have with my patrons and their families. Over the last 17 years, we’ve grown up together, and that’s very rewarding. We’ve gotten married, had kids, and even experienced loss together. My customers are like family.

What do you find most rewarding about being an entrepreneur? What are the challenges? 

I love being an entrepreneur because I get to see my vision come to life right before my eyes. Henderson has always been very supportive of me and my style, and that makes it all worth it. Some of the challenges may be staying ahead of the trends and being the first one with the product the public wants.  Lord knows I could have used a couple hundred more fidget spinners.

What hobbies do you and your family enjoy? 

My family and I enjoy spending time outdoors with the dogs and extended family and hanging out with our neighbors. I’ve come to enjoy mowing and gardening. We are always on the go and try to stay involved in many activities Henderson has to offer. And, of course, the TikTok challenges the kids are always wanting us to do.

How has the pandemic affected your job as a barber? 

The pandemic has definitely been a challenge. We were closed for several weeks, but my customers are amazing.  I knew we would be okay. As a small business owner, I’ve been able to adapt quickly to keep my customers safe while providing the same great services they expect from us in a safe environment.

If you could give advice to someone wanting to start their own business, what would it be? 

My advice would be to just go for it. Taking the first step is the hardest, but it’s so worth it in the end. As long as your business is your passion, I truly believe success will come.
